    Summary
    Sheila, a seventeen-year-old typist who spends her days fantasizing about a movie-style romance, agrees to marry her forty-year-old employer. Reality falls short of fantasy, however, and Sheila has to learn to deal with the patronising attitudes of her husband's relatives and her own acute self-consciousness about her lower-class status. Led to believe that her husband has married her simply to produce a male heir, Sheila conceals her pregnancy from him and bears her child in Italy.
