Sixteen-year-old Keyonna and her older brother Samuel live on the brink of eviction while dreaming of a better tomorrow. But when “all the Natalie Portmans” start talking back to her, Keyonna finally has to face her off-screen drama in this imaginative new play that reminds us to embrace life on the ground while still reaching for the stars.

Cast Attributes

KEYONNA – 16, smart, lonely, a dreamer
SAMUEL – 18, exceedingly kind, a high school dropout, a fixer
CHANTEL – 17, very pretty, very afraid, but quick
OVETTA – Mid-40s, a hotel worker, recovering alcoholic, trying
NATALIE PORTMAN – White, ageless, the Academy Award-winning actress (sort of)
EPPS – Upstairs neighbor, landlord, alcoholic (heard but not seen)

A few notes on NATALIE: It’s not important that the actress look like Natalie Portman too closely. It’s also not important that she too obviously emulates the real woman or her various roles. She is a manifestation of Keyonna’s inner psyche, which serves a purpose that, though tangential to the given role being cited, is wholly its own thing. In short: play around.

Media

“Tense and witty with profound reverberations.” – The Daily Beast

“Displays a deft way with character, enhanced by the playwright’s palpable sympathy.” – The New York Times

“Carefully wrought, intimate scenes... Johnson has obvious gifts for easy-flowing, realistic dialogue among family and friends.” – David Cote, Theater News Online

“[The play] demonstrates substantial talent and heart... The relationship between this Natalie—an always game, sometimes goofy, ultimately empathic imaginary friend...—and Keyonna, who is given defiant and tremendously endearing vitality... is the most entertaining and moving aspect of the play.” – New York Stage Review
