Summary

Snow in July, comets falling from the sky… the world is thrown into chaos as Cupid (a Latine god) rips off her wings and gives up on love. But her old flame Saint Valentine has a plan to bring her spirits back up, and it involves reigniting the flame between Alejandro and Benny, two queer folk who are going through a breakup.

Moving from the heavens to Hackensack, I Wanna Fuck like Romeo and Juliet is a love story of epic proportions that captures the many flavors of queer love.

History
I Wanna Fuck Like Romeo and Juliet premiered at the New Light Theatre Project at 59E59 Theaters in New York City on 20 October 2022. Directed by Jesse Jou, the production featured Juan Arturo, Greg Cuellar, Jacqueline Guillen, Ashton Muñiz and Elizabeth Ramos.

The GODS
CUPID – God of love. Appears as a Latinx woman in her 20s-30s. Puts on a bitter, hard exterior. Incredibly heartbroken and tired. Fierce and ferocious. Speaks Spanish and English.
VALENTINE – Patron saint of love. Male presenting. Appears as any ethnicity, slightly younger than Cupid. Joyous, a rascal – more of a trickster than a saint. Believer in love, completely and indefinitely.
THE POET – God, or something like it. A voice. Also voices ALEXA, SCRUFF VOICES and REPORTER.

The LOVERS
BENNY RANDLE – mid-20s Black queer man. Avoids the difficult questions by putting on a façade of ridiculousness and fabulousness. Lover to Alejandro. Mortal.
ALEJANDRO DIAZ – Mid-30s Latinx queer man. Runs from anything that can hurt him. Sedate and steady like water, and just as stubborn. Lover to Benny. Mortal. Speaks Spanish and English.

The DENTAL HYGIENIST
BETTI – A woman of color (any ethnicity but white). A child of immigrants and a dental hygienist. In her 30s. Incredibly sad, incredibly eager. Looking for something new in her life. Mortal, with untapped potential for the Divine.

NOTE: There is flexibility around THE POET. It can be voiced by another actor in the ensemble (if you do this, please make the voice distinct from the other character). Or THE POET’s lines can be divided among multiple actors, but beware that the line between confusing and clear is thin. I always imagine THE POET’s voice to be more femme and queer-coded, and I always hear it on a god mic in my head. But do whatever is best for your production.

5 actors plus one offstage voice, for The POET and others.

“Andrew Rincón puts together a story that is at once on the far-out fringes of reality, and at the same time resonates the truth about how people feel in their hearts and in their minds when love is at stake.” – Hi! Drama

“Genuine charm, wit, enjoyable characters, and often clever dialog that crosses easily between English and Spanish... Altogether, a real treat for romcom fans (and who isn't one?).” – Talkin’ Broadway
